Super 8

In a small town in Ohio in 1979 during the summer, a group of friends are filming a Super-8 movie when a pick up truck drives into and derails a government train. Soon after, unusual disappearances, unexplained animal behavior and military units takes over this small town. As the truth reveal itself no one is prepare especially Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney), who with the help of his friends uncover the truth. And what the government is really trying to hide, from the unsuspecting citizens.

Super 8 was hyped up to be this summer mega movie with all the elements, but fell short. Super 8 is a regurgitation of Cloverfield, E.T with a little of Transformers. There's nothing unique or new about Super 8. I'm very disappointed when you have a Directed like J.J Abrams and Producer Steven Spielberg attach to a project like this one and it fall short to your expectation. But all is not lost because the little Super-8 film the kids were filming was really good and you get to see it at the end.

I give this movie 2 1/2 Stars.

  1. While I like the word choice, I really don't see this film to be a "regurgitation" of Spielberg's work. Rather it is a giddy celebration and tribute to a special (almost nostalgic) type of science fiction that we don't see anymore. It's nothing like "Cloverfield," as we don't have a "Blair Witch Project" POV or much alien destruction. If anything, it's a warped ET story in how a child is involved in an alien creature returning home. True, there isn't a lot of newness involved, but there doesn't need to be. After all, it IS science fiction. We've practically seen everything there is to see. It's a valentines letter to a specific demographic of the genre. I wish more movies were made this way. I wasn't disappointed, except for the decision to show the monster (and making it look like Christopher Lee crossed with Optimus Prime) and having the ending just... well... kinda suck. But neither of these elements were enough to ruin what is a brilliant execution to a brilliant movie. The acting is great, the writing is great, and the effects are great. The style of the early wonder of science fiction is perfectly kept in tact. It sucks that you didn't like it more. I give it a solid A- (or 4.5 out of 5).
